Chemicals control protects human health
STTV’s task is to prevent
health risks and fire and explosion hazards caused by chemicals. STTV supervises the national implementation of the Chemicals Act.
STTV is responsible for new
substances’ notification procedures, existing substances’ risk assessment,
authorisation of biocides, evaluation of the health
effects of pesticides, wood preservatives and slimicides, approval of GLP test
facilities, enforcement of chemicals legislation and for maintaining the
chemicals product register (KETU). STTV also supervises
the compliance with regulations concerning material safety data sheets. STTV’s tasks are defined in the Chemicals Act and
Pesticides Act which are mainly based on EU legislation.
STTV participates in the EU risk assessment programmes
for chemicals and plant protection products. STTV’s duty is to evaluate the
health risks of chemicals to consumers and employees.
REACH, the new
regulatory framework for chemicals in the EU, is estimated to enter into force
during the summer of 2007. REACH is an integrated system for registration,
evaluation and authorisation of chemicals. The new regulatory framework will
bring substantial changes to the existing legislation for chemicals control.
